Brooksville, Fla. – After weeks of debate, the Brooksville City Council has approved a 13.23% property tax increase, setting the city’s millage rate at 6.500 mils for the next fiscal year.
The decision, passed during a tense council meeting, replaces last year’s rolled-back rate of 5.7407 mils. City leaders who backed the hike said the additional revenue is needed to maintain public services and fund infrastructure projects.
“This was not an easy decision, but the city has to remain financially stable,” one council member said.
Opponents warned the increase could put additional strain on homeowners at a time of rising living costs. Newly elected council members pushed for alternatives but were outvoted.
The tax hike has sparked debate across the community, with some residents calling it necessary for growth while others see it as government overreach.
