BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The Brooksville City Council voted Wednesday September 15th, 2025 to consolidate the city’s fire department with Hernando County Fire Rescue, a move officials say will streamline operations and enhance public safety. The consolidation is set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
The council approved the measure 3‑2, with dissenting members citing concerns about local control and the impact on city identity. Under the agreement, all city fire department personnel will be offered positions with the county, retaining years of service, accrued leave, and seniority.
The county will take over responsibilities including fire inspections, purchasing the city’s fire engine and brush truck, and assuming pension liabilities. Fire Station 10 will retain the Brooksville name.
City officials emphasized the consolidation is a solution to longstanding operational and financial challenges. For over a decade, the city has struggled to maintain a fully staffed and equipped fire department, citing aging equipment and limited resources.
Supporters of the measure said the consolidation will allow residents to benefit from improved emergency services and more efficient use of taxpayer funds. “This change will ensure consistent coverage and better resources for our community,” one council member said.
Opponents argued that the move reduces the city’s autonomy over fire services and alters the close-knit culture of the local department. Some council members also noted the emotional impact on firefighters and their families.
The agreement includes a city payment to the county of nearly $1.5 million for fire and EMS services in the 2026 fiscal year. Starting in 2027, the county will levy fire assessment fees directly on city residents.
Officials said they will continue to monitor the transition closely to ensure that service quality remains high and that all personnel are integrated smoothly into county operations.
